Advantages to a newspaper portraying a particular ideology:

Component one - media

Introduction to the times and constructing representations:

Advantages to a newspaper portraying a particular ideology:

  • leans to one particular political party
  • this maximizes the target audience and categorises the market for tabloids and newspapers.
Broadsheet:
  • 'quality' or 'serious' press, to be taken seriously
  • Aimed at a higher social groupings
  • More serious headings
  • Plainer layout (little colour on the front page, smaller typeface suggests readers will make more effort to read it).
  • Longer articles in more detail
Tabloids e.g. Daily Mirror, the sun:
  • "popular' press
  • Aimed at a lower class of people
  • Bold layout, very bold with a lot of colour so it can stand out, with large dramatic pictures
  • Shorter articles, more pictures, less 'in-depth' detail within
  • Puns and jokes in the dramatic headlines
  • Use of gimmicks such as bingo, free travel tickets etc.

Polysemy = not everything has one singular meaning. One of the best ways of applying media theory, is through suggesting two or more possible meanings.

In creating and publishing newspapers/tabloids the producers try to avoid using Polysemy because they want to almost create a biased target audience and make them only believe one view.

Anchorage= The 'fixing' of a particular meaning to media text, often through the use of captions.

Can representations construct reality?

Agenda= the underlying intentions or motives of a particular person or group.

Bias= inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair.

How to assess bias:
  • Bias through selection and omission
  • Bias through placements
  • Bias by headlines
  • Bias by photos, captions and camera angles .etc
  • Bias through names and titles

THE SUN
  • Over exaggerated headlines and descriptions
  • Unintelligent descriptions and analysis of different articles
  • Irrelevant articles
  • 'puppy love stars admit how much they love their dog' articles that are irrelevant to modern life.

THE GUARDIAN

  • In depth film reviews rather than bingo, or promotional offers for holidays or any deals
  • More intellectual reviews or political articles
  • More hard-hitting sentimental videos covering serious situations that are happening around the world, rather that irrelevant videos about small arguments between celebrities .etc
  • Less bold and smaller descriptions of the different articles, allowing the audience to individually pick out the articles they want to read.

Homework: Article about poverty in Britain

  • Intellectual language used to appeal for upper class or middle class target audience.
  • Simple, singular descriptions and picture, there is not a ridiculous amount of pictures and headlines to describe this particular article.
  • Detailed facts and figures to emphasize the importance and serious note of this article: '60% of those in poverty are in families where someone works'
  • Other critics and authors mentioned within this article: noted the American writer Nikole Hannah-Jones last week
